No-Gi Special
To get into the ADCC 2009 mood, GRACIEMAG put together a special issue with the history, techniques and everything else you need to know about no-gi Jiu-Jitsu
Less than a month from ADCC 2009, at the end of September in Barcelona, Spain, GRACIEMAG makes it to readers with a special issue geared towards no-gi Jiu-Jitsu. Luca Atalla pieced together the history of the style, threw in technical details and explained the changes the modality brought to the world of martial arts.
To the same tune, we came up with a renowned teacher for this month’s training program. Ricardo “Cachorrao” Almeida, a black belt GMA member, is the leader of a network of academies spread across the United States, and is an MMA fighter in the UFC to boot. Cachorrao teaches how to perfect your no-gi takedowns, takedowns defenses, counters and submissions.
And to ccomplish the nogi subject, a bit of controversy. We went after ADCC 2007 absolute champion Robert Drysdale, and he didn’t shy away from GRACIEMAG’s microphone. He spoke of what he expects from the competition in Barcelona and assured us he’ll take it to Roger Gracie in the event’s supermatch.
Further proof GRACIEMAG doesn’t steer clear of hot topics, we sought to find out from athletes and masters why brilliant brown belts tend not to repeat their virtuous performances at black. Stalwarts like Rickson Gracie, Marcio Feitosa, Romero Jacare and others provide valuable insight to help you shorten the chasm between brown and black.
Featured in the GMA section is complete coverage of the International Master & Senior and the Rio Open International, which assembled a legion of associates in Rio de Janeiro, in July; the story of a blue belt George Sernack student who donned his gi to face the greatest challenge of his life; Mauricio Zingano teaches a slick armbar; Andre Negao introduces a student of his who is a beast – at the piano; plus a visit to an associate in Chicago.
Keeping with the strategy of regionalizing Jiu-Jitsu, GRACIEMAG focuses its attention on Canada, where the Toronto Classic shook up the country’s gentle art community. Keep on top of BJJ’s growth and get to know who the stars on the rise are.
In the monthly column, Martin Rooney calls our attention to a bit of simplicity that translates to efficacy. The physical conditioning coach to a plethora of MMA and BJJ stars demonstrates creative ways to perform the push-up, a basic, but essential, exercise.
And there are the Intro, Anthology and diet too.
