This Sunday, the champions of the 2017 ADCC Worlds emerged in Helsinki, Finland. Well-known faces and new breakout stars reached the top in breathtaking matches. Here’s our summary of what went down at the Espoo Metro Arena.

WOMEN’S

60kg

After some intense grip-trading at the start, with takedown attempts, Bia Mesquita manages to grab Bia Basílio’s waist from the back and take her down. Basílio fell sitting, but Mesquita went straight to the back before spreading the chicken and finishing via rear naked choke.

Over 60kg

In a duel decided through pressure, Gabi Garcia took Talita Treta to the ground and mounted. Treta turned sideways and tried to escape, but Gabi attacked with an americana and tapped her out in just over a minute.

MEN’S

66kg

Rubens Cobrinha was persistent with single-leg attempts, which AJ Agazarm defended well against. After going to the ground, Cobrinha went to the back and attempted the choke a few times, but AJ managed to defend and get back up. Cobrinha again attacked the back and ended up scoring 6-0 to secure his third ADCC title — all that after winning all the biggest tournaments of the season.

77kg

Returning from an injury, JT Torres bravely made his way through the bracket until he met Lucas Lepri in the final. A runner-up last edition, Lepri attacked the back and saw Torres escape. On top, the Brazilian worked to pass, unsuccessfully. In overtime, JT managed to grab Lepri’s waist from behind, take him down and place the hooks, outscoring him 3-0.

88kg

Young Gordon Ryan went after fellow American Keenan Cornelius, achieving a takedown right away, before points were being counted. On the ground, Gordon tried twice to sink a guillotine. Keenan escaped the first one, but not the second. Even with his arm on the inside, Keenan couldn’t resist the squeeze and had to surrender.

99kg

Lots of movement in this one. Yuri Simões fiercely attacked Felipe Preguiça. On the ground, Felipe did the 50/50, got up and tried to attack Yuri’s guard. After they scrambled when switching positions, on the feet, Yuri manages to grab Felipe’s waist from behind, and then jumps to try and take his back. Felipe falls, and, having landed on top, Yuri scores two points to win. This is his second title, following a victorious 88kg campaign in 2015.

Over 99kg

Marcus Buchecha faced the sitting champion, Orlando Sanchez, in the final. Orlando got out ahead as he was on top in the north–south position. Buchecha reversed that position and took his opponent down, then took his back and attempted a rear naked choke. Orlando defends and manages to get back up. After an accidental head strike that injured Orlando, Buchecha attacked with the guillotine, spun to the back, placed the hooks, and wound up with a 6-0 win.
