The newest Jiu-Jitsu brown belt star is a fine example of tenacity. Today, at age 26, Roosevelt Sousa had to sell water on the streets of João Pessoa, Paraíba, in 2017, to realize his dream in the sport. Now, two years later, he finds himself in Miami, Florida, well trained and living as a professional athlete under the eye of Roberto Cyborg.
With wins in the No-Gi Pan, American Nationals and San Diego, Roosevelt now wants to close the 2019 season with another medal from the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). Cyborg’s student dreams of double gold at the No-Gi Worlds, scheduled for December in Anaheim, California.
“I’m doing everything a champion needs to do to be a champion. I sleep well, I have a good diet and I train a lot. Now, due to the intense training Cyborg did for ADCC, I was able to improve my wrestling game; now it’s well honed, and I keep practicing. This will be a great weapon at the No-Gi Worlds,” says Roosevelt, who was just a No-Gi Pan champion in late September.
The Fight Sports athlete, who will compete in the heavyweight division at the No-Gi Worlds, tells what the Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts can expect from him and how his strategy will be put together.
“They can expect a forward style the whole time, fighting to win with authority. My strategy is to fight forward without leaving spaces. I’m excited to represent everyone who believes in me too,” says Roosevelt.
