Following the UFC 161 press conference, Dana White on Thursday said that UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will likely face off in Houston this coming October.
In November 2011, Velasquez was knocked out by dos Santos in just over a minute. This was the first setback of his career, and he was not satisfied, assuring that he would regain the belt. The fighter later revealed that he was injured before the fight, and pointed to the injury as the reason why he was so apathetic in combat.
A year later, the heavyweights faced off again at UFC 155. Velasquez used the perfect strategy, shutting down the Brazilian’s game and got the win by unanimous decision. Dos Santos admitted later to having suffered from overtraining and personal problems that would not allow him to fight at 100 percent.
But the paths of these fighters seem to be destined to cross. At UFC 160 in May, Velasquez knocked out Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, while on the same card dos Santos knocked out Mark Hunt.
This puts Fabricio Werdum in an unfavorable position, since he just beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and was tipped as the next challenger for the UFC heavyweight belt.
