At last weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Slam London, Ana Carolina Vieira performed flawlessly to win gold in the women’s 70kg division, with three submissions achieved in three matches.
In the final against Thamara Silva (Cícero Costha), Ana Carolina got a good start with a takedown. Then she worked on top with pressure, not unlike her brother Rodolfo Vieira used to do in the gi. But Thamara’s elastic guard, bearing her team’s signature, was able to contain the attacks by the GFTeam black-belt.
Even though she was ahead on the scoreboard, Ana Carolina changed up her strategy. With under a minute to go, she pulled guard, wrapped her opponent’s arm, got her hip out, and applied an armbar, using armpit and forearm to carry out the finish.
