Saturday the 20th was an eventful day for BJJ fans, with the last round of IBJJF opens before the 2017 World Championship. The Brazilian city of Curitiba hosted the event that gave out the last points for the season’s black belt IBJJF rankings. Leandro Lo and Bia Basílio each won two gold medals.
Leandro Lo first nabbed heavyweight gold as he closed out the tourney with Fernando Toshio. Then the open division came down to Lo vs. Erberth Santos.
Erberth, who had beat the super-heavyweight field, wound up swept by Lo (see it in the video below). With the reversal, Lo got the win and secured the No. 1 spot in the ranking, four points ahead of Erberth.
Women’s
Fearless Bia Basílio of Almeida Jiu-Jitsu won lightweight gold as she beat Lauriane Mendes (OCS JJ). Super-heavyweight champion Tayane Porfírio, the favorite for the open title, bowed out due to a personal matter, so it was Claudia do Val (De La Riva) who made it to the final against Basílio. With a back-take, Basílio secured her second gold medal.
