Daniel Cormier will get his wish and face Frank Mir at UFC on FOX 7 on April 20, UFC officials told GRACIEMAG.com on Tuesday.
The fight will likely be the co-main event for the card, which will take place in San Jose at the HP Pavilion. As GRACIEMAG.com reported on Monday, the event is headlined by UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson defending his title against the last Strikeforce lightweight champ, Gilbert Melendez.
Cormier (11-0) completed his tenure in the now-defunct Strikeforce promotion last Saturday with a drubbing of Dion Staring. After the fight, the American Kickboxing Academy heavyweight said in his post-fight interview that he wants to fight Mir on the upcoming FOX card. Just three days later, the fight has become a reality.
Mir (16-6) was last seen in competition fighting for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 146. The challenger was dominated by then-champion Junior dos Santos on the way to dropping the fight by technical knockout in the second round.
Cormier and Mir were originally supposed to fight at a Strikeforce event last November, but an injury to Mir prevented the fight from happening and the show was ultimately canceled as a result.
No other fights were announced for the April FOX card. Yahoo! Sports first brought the news of the matchup.
