Jiu-Jitsu fans were treated to just what they like best at the IBJJF European Open last Jan. 24 to 27 in Lisbon, Portugal. Besides the top-notch action that unfolded on the mats, one of the sport’s heroes made his comeback. Fernando Tererê returned to world class competition, to the delight of the gentle-art-loving public.
To secure his spot in the middleweight final, Tererê went through another touching moment, one that nearly caused a bunch of burly fighters in Portugal to burst into tears.
His former student Alan “Finfou” do Nascimento paid tribute to the idol from Rio de Janeiro’s Cantagalo favela and stepped aside for him to go through to the gold medal-deciding match.
In the final, Tererê took on Calasans, and though it didn’t end the way anyone would have wanted it to, it was worthwhile for the emotion it provided. Watch for yourself:
