Alliance “general” Fábio Gurgel never before lived up to his moniker so much as he does in these days leading up to the 2012 World Championship. Hot in pursuit of a seventh team title for Alliance (their fifth in a row), the team leader, who shares the role with Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti, takes to the front lines with no less than 270 athletes of diverse origins spread across all weight and belt groups. Considering how there are a little over 2,600 athletes signed up in all, Gurgel has over 10 percent of them under his command. In this exclusive interview for the GRACIEMAG Facebook page, Gurgel addresses how the stars Marcelo Garcia, Sérgio Moraes and Michael Langhi will not be joining the mix, but assures that their absence will not affect the objective of maintaining the eagle atop the podium. He also defends his student Gabi Garcia of criticism and praises the determination of Cobrinha, who even after losing at the Pan didn’t hesitate to add his name to the featherweight contest for another crack at Rafael Mendes. And lastly, the general offers his assessment of the current state of Jiu-Jitsu and unflinchingly ventures that the technical level at which the gentle art finds itself today is higher than it was back when he amassed his four world titles.
