After months of speculation and doubts about the future of Kaynan Duarte in IBJJF tournaments, a note was released on Friday, February 7, by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), confirming that the black-belt from Atos tested positive for an illegal substance.

The world heavyweight champion in 2019, after winning the final against Leandro Lo, Kaynan was caught using Ostarine, an anabolic substance categorized as a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). The main characteristic of the product is that it generates increased protein production in the muscles, without the traditional side effects of common anabolic steroids.

As a punishment, Kaynan will be out of competition in the IBJJF and affiliates for one year, with retroactive punishment starting on June 2, 2019. The USADA note also says that any titles won by Kaynan have been stripped. With that, Leandro Lo becomes the 2019 heavyweight world champion, in addition to moving up to second place in the absolute. After the announcement, Kaynan released on social media his statement about what happened (unedited, below).

After fully investigating my case, USADA agreed that my positive test was for trace amounts of the banned substance ostarine, and that it was not the result of intentional use. It is for that reason that USADA agreed to reduce my sanction from four years to one year. Before I was notified of my positive test, I did not even know what ostarine was. I have always taken special care to only use safe supplements; unfortunately, despite being careful, I was still exposed to trace amounts of ostarine in the months leading up to the World Championships. Even though this was an accident, I know that I am ultimately responsible for everything that goes into my body. I would like to apologize to my family, friends, coaches, sponsors and fans, and also thank them for their support during what has been a difficult time away from the sport. I continue to focus on training and staying in shape, and look forward to my return to IBJJF competition after this year’s World Championships.
