Shane Carwin saw his chances in American football evaporate due to an injury, but destiny would have it that the heavyweight would find success in MMA. He boasts a record of 12 first-round wins, seven by knockout and five by submission. Among his victims, former title challenger Gabriel Napão and former champion Frank Mir have fallen at his hand. Now Carwin will have his shot at becoming champion this Saturday against the gigantic and feared Brock Lesnar at UFC 116.

I like thinking I’m better than him” Shane Carwin

“I hope I can combat his athletic capacity and size with my own attributes. I like to think I’m a better athlete than him. I don’t know in which other sports and athletic activities he has participated, but I could challenge him in a number of things,” warns the heavy-handed fighter on the UFC website.

However, there is one question still up in the air. The longest Carwin has ever had to fight in the cage was 3:48 min, against Frank Mir. All his other opponents succumbed in less time. Is the fighter really prepared to fight past the first round?

“I answer that question a lot. They doubt my gas. Until proven otherwise, people will always ask that. And, even once that one’s answered, there will be other questions about other things.”

We may find out tonight…
