Another three match-ups were added to the card for the April 27 UFC 159 event in New Jersey, USA.
Yesterday, the announcement was made that Brazilian black belt Vinny Magalhães has been matched against light heavyweight Phil Davis, while American black belt Roy Nelson is set to take on Cheick Kongo in heavyweight action.
This morning, the UFC confirmed that hometown fighter Jim Miller will be taking on former Strikeforce fighter Pat Healy, who is riding a six-fight win streak in the lightweight division.
The fights were announced on the UFC Tonight television program this Tuesday, Jan. 29.
The fight between Magalhães and Davis was built up over Twitter, when the Brazilian revealed his interest in facing Davis, who promptly accepted.
Vinny Magalhães (10w, 5l) too is riding a six-fight win streak, and he made his UFC debut last September, when he tapped out Igor Pokrajac with an armbar in the second round at UFC 152.
Now, Davis (10w, 1l) suffered the lone loss of his career in January of last year, when he was outdone by Rashad Evans at the second iteration of UFC on Fox. Davis lost a unanimous decision. Afterwards, he went on to face Wagner “Caldeirão” Prado at UFC on Fox 4, but the fight ended in a no contest after Phil accidentally thumbed his opponent in the eye. They had a rematch at UFC 153 in October 2012, and Davis tapped the Brazilian out with an arm-triangle in the second round.
Roy Nelson vs. Kongo
Another fight scheduled for UFC 159 is the heavyweight tilt between Roy Nelson and Cheick Kongo.
Nelson (18w, 7l) has won by first-round knockout in his last two fights: one over Dave Herman at UFC 146 and the latest over Matt Mitrione at season finale of reality show TUF 16, where Nelson coached the blue team opposite Shane Carwin’s yellow team. Nelson was originally set to face Carwin but ended up taking on the replacement, Mitrione.
At the opposite corner will be France’s Check Kongo (18w, 7l, 2d), who has scored ten career knockouts and comes into the fight after beating Shawn Jordan at UFC 149, in July of last year.
