Even with a card almost devoid of big names, this Saturday’s UFC São Paulo had plenty for MMA fans to chew on. Featuring newcomers with a lot of promise, the event, held at Ibirapuera Gymnasium, had high points, a historic submission, farewells and striking wins.
Of note BJJ-wise, Charles do Bronx used a rear naked choke to beat Christos Giagos, making the São Paulo native the new holder of the record for most submission wins in the UFC, at 11. The UFC’s very first champion, Royce Gracie, retired with ten such wins under his belt.

Prior to do Bronx’s fight, two-time BJJ world champion Serginho Moraes bested Ben Saunders, who, a competent grappler himself, accepted to fight on the ground and wound up surprised by a kata-gatame.
