Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will face Chael Sonnen at UFC on Fox Sports 1 #1, the fighter announced on “UFC Tonight” on Tuesday evening.
The fight will headline the card, which takes place on Aug. 17 at the TD Garden in Boston.
Shogun was scheduled to have a rematch with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 161 on June 15, but an injury to Nogueira left Rua without an opponent. Sonnen stepped up to face Rua to save the card’s co-main event, according to reports, but the fight never materialized.
Shogun’s last performance had him taking on current No. 1 contender Alexander Gustafsson in losing effort, while Sonnen’s last outing was a loss to light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.
