There was excitement to spare at UFC Fight Night 22 this Wednesday in Texas. Among the evening’s highlights were Nat Marquardt’s pound-out win over Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares and Charles do Bronx’s ringmanship and submission-of-the-night finish over Efrain Escudero, proving he is at home in the world-famous octagon.
Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares
After much study, Toquinho managed the takedown and set to work using his Jiu-Jitsu. After landing on top but caught between Marquardt’s legs, he freed himself and sat back for a heelhook, but Nate escaped. The Brazilian letting his attention go astray complaining of something, Marquardt jumped on the opportunity unforgivingly and dove in to pound Toquinho out till referee Herb Dean intervened.
Efrain Escudero vs Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira
In only his second fight in the UFC, Charles do Bronx carried himself like a veteran. Against favorite Escudero, winner of the “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show, the Jiu-Jitsu brown belt put in a dominant performance. The Brazilian showed his standup mettle by taking the center of the octagon, freely launching kick, punch and knee attacks. But it would be Jiu-Jitsu that defined the fight, as in the third round, Charles swiftly moved to Escudero’s back, after a takedown, and sunk the choke hold after his opponent was on his feet.
Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau
Tibau managed to land some takedowns in the early rounds. However, once on the ground, the black belt was ineffective. Now Miller, who preferred to keep it standing, landed solid shots during the initial rounds. A straight left landed square on Tibau in the second. The third round was evenly matched, without much action, and once it was all over, the judges gave Jim Miller the nod by unanimous decision.
Ross Pearson vs. Cole Miller
Accompanied by black belt Marcus Parrumpinha, the coach at the ATT, Cole Miller looked the part of Jiu-Jitsu’s purveyor, wearing a gi and purple belt into the arena. Englishman Ross Peason did his best to avoid the ground once the fight was underway, but after a series of hard blows, he ended up going down. His mistake was in going to all fours. Miller sought the back mount and to use his main skill, yielding the rear-naked choke win while still in the opening round.
In the preliminary action, Rich Attonito didn’t mess around and beat Rafael Sapo by unanimous decision. Much as Anthony Waldburger, Dave Branch, Kyle Kingsbury and Yves Edwards did in theirs. Now Brian Foster overcame Forrest Petz via technical knockout in just 1:07 min of fighting.
