José Correa Gymnasium, in Barueri, Sao Paulo, was once more the stage to a great BJJ competition. The South American BJJ Championship, held Nov. 25 through 27, brought a group of talented athletes to town, from juveniles to masters.
The weekend saw the adult black belt contests, with Victor Honório (GFTeam) and Tayane Porfírio (Alliance) standing out. They each won double gold.
Honório beat Igor “Tigrão” Schneider (Brotherhood) in the ultra-heavyweight final. Then, in the open division, he again met his rival Erberth Santos, the world’s current runner-up absolute BJJ fighter, who had beat the field at super-heavyweight. The obstructed duel was developing with several penalties, with the referee having interrupted it three times.
To avoid a fourth penalty and double disqualification, Erberth seized the initiative and pulled into closed guard. Honório opened it, and Erberth managed to stand up. As he tried to pull again, however, Erberth was quicker, moving away and jumping to get to the side and win the decisive three points.
The women’s absolute final pitted Tayane Porfírio (ultra-heavyweight winner over Joaquina Bonfim) against the brave Mackenzie Dern (lightweight winner over Eloisa Souto). Porfírio (Alliance Leblon) routed Dern 20-0.
