Last Thursday marked the beginning of the most important tournament in the CBJJE season, the 2018 Sport Jiu-Jitsu World Championship. The competition, which will continue until the 8th of July, had quite an eventful start.
Among the standout athletes enrolled, Erberth Santos drew the attention of fans present at the Mauro Pinheiro gymnasium at Ibirapuera Park in Brazil. Having taken a break from competition a few months ago, the leader of Esquadrão de Jiu-Jitsu Brasileiro fought in the ultra-heavyweight division and bagged the 1,000-real first-place prize. His campaign n the absolute division, however, wasn’t so fortunate.
After making his way through the bracket with three submissions, Erberth was pitted against Matheus Spirandeli of NS Brotherhood in the final. Erberth started out more effective, working on top against Matheus’ guard. But as the fight developed, Erberth started feeling visibly sick, and even vomited on the mat. This caused the match to be cut short by the referee, and the title was given to Matheus, along with the prize for 5,000 reais.
Later, Erberth posted to social media saying he was still not a hundred percent great and graciously praising his opponent. You can watch the absolute final here:
