“I remember how in 2006 I was a blue belt and got to watch Cobrinha compete at black belt, and I knew I’d get to face him in a few years. I just didn’t think it would be this quick,” says Rafael Mendes. “In 2006 I won the Worlds as a blue belt and he as a black belt; in 2008 I got my brown belt and was promoted to black at the end of the year. The lesson I learnt is that we have to tune in to the kids coming up in the other belts, because in time they’ll be our opponents…”
