Just after securing their gold medals at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, the female black belt champs had a chat with GRACIEMAG.com.
From seven-time champ Letícia Ribeiro to first-timers Beatriz Mesquita and Fernanda Mazzeli, each of them stated their impression of what went down on Sunday at the Worlds. But it was records that defined the competition for the biggest female names of the event:
Letícia Ribeiro: “I’m overjoyed for two reasons: One is that I won my seventh world title, equaling the record of a great champion, Hannette [Staack]. And the other is that this is my 15th World Championship; I’m the only girl who has been in all the World Championships since girls were allowed in, in 1998.”
Gabi Garcia: “I’m so happy to have won the absolute at a World Championship for the third time, equaling Roger’s record. He’s always been my idol. He and Fabio Gurgel are my two idols. And I’m really happy my family got to watch. My father was really thrilled.
I’m just really happy about these results. In the end it was all much better than I had hoped.”
